The VALON project leads research to recover value from antimony in electronic waste, advancing the circular economy and opening new industrial opportunities in the Basque Country.
VALON is a joint initiative led by the Technology Centre GAIKER and the business R&D Unit INATEC of OTUA, which aims to research and develop technologies to recover value from the antimony contained in the plastic fraction of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) rich in brominated flame retardants (BFR). This innovative project responds to the need to ensure a sustainable supply of critical raw materials, such as antimony, which is essential for various strategic industries. VALON aspires to considerably reduce the volume of plastics destined for landfill in the Basque Autonomous Community, opening a new market for antimony trioxide, thereby fostering the circular economy and strengthening regional industrial competitiveness.
The project is subsidised by the Elkartek programme and supported by the Basque Government and the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
