TRINEFLEX: Transformation of energy intensive process industries through integration of energy, process, and feedstock flexibility
High energy-intensive industries are the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Consequently, the application of the twin transition (digitalisation and sustainability) is key to moving towards climate action goals. A radical shift is urgently needed in the way energy-intensive industries adopt digital technologies — such as Digital Twins, Big Data Infrastructures and AI — to provide comprehensive knowledge and detailed insight into process parameters. This digitalisation transformation would enhance the flexibility strategies needed to adapt energy consumption patterns to grid requirements.
The TRINEFLEX project brings together a large number of partners who are experts in technologies and services for energy management, energy transition and industry decarbonisation, digitalisation and Big Data infrastructure, digital twin modelling and deployment, and more. The project solutions will be implemented across 5 demonstration cases in the glass, aluminium, water and copper sectors, through the integration of transformative technologies, with the aim of driving the evolution of process industries towards net-zero emissions targets by 2050.

The TRINEFLEX project's general assembly (M30) took place on 18-19 March 2025 at the Palacio de Congresos Europa in Vitoria-Gasteiz, concluding with a visit to the REFIAL plant. It was a pleasure to welcome our partners and share with them our progress in materials recycling.
